Dear Jason Cule,
My name is also Jason. In 2055 I’m middle aged, but in your time I was 22. I’m sending myself this message from my future. Back in 2016 I was downright suicidal. If I hadn’t received this message I would have killed myself. In 2016 I haven’t been able to get a decent job and my 2nd kid is on their way. I wish I could tell you that I’m going to get a great job soon, but it’s going to take a while. I can promise the struggle is going to be worth it though. Let me tell you our future.
The first decent automated cars hit the economy in 2018. From there everything changed incredibly fast. By 2030, 29 of the 30 million professional drivers (bus, taxi, truck) were out of a job.
Automated restaurants took a bit longer. It was 2025 when most restaurants could be automated, and then the same thing happened. By 2035, 25 of the 27 million Food Service workers were out their jobs too.
Landscaping had started automating around 2020. The job got to where 1 person would drive from client to client. They’d unload the robots, get them working and then do the tasks that the robots weren’t ready for. Around 2030 general purpose robots were finally skilled enough that we didn’t even need a human to unload the other robots anymore.
Industry after industry did the same thing. Better and better tools allowed one person to do more and more work, until we could have a whole company with multiple locations being run by one person and some service contractors.
Don’t get me wrong. New jobs came along. The problem was, for every 10 jobs destroyed, 5 jobs would be created… and then automated down to only 1 again.
The economy expanded incredibly. US GDP quintupled in 3 decades! That only happened because we got smart though. Early on, we started having a problem with consumers. People without jobs can’t buy stuff. We had decades of “recession” where the rich got richer and the poor got poorer.
Luckily a couple northern European countries tried something called a “universal income.” They gave every single citizen a survival income. Some people were content with that, but most people decided they either wanted to try to get a job, start a business, follow their passion or at least earn a bit of spending money.
It took the European counties a couple years, but they figured out how to make the universal income work. Suddenly having to spend 30% of your GDP on a completely new expense is a pretty big shock for any country, but it sure helped that their economy doubled within 2 years!
After seeing it work in Europe we decided to try it here in the USA. At first conservatives hated it. We had riots of people chanting things like “by the sweat of our brow!”, but then business owners realized something… They could trade the minimum wage for the universal income!
The point of the minimum wage was to ensure that people could survive off of what they were earning, but if people were going to survive anyway, business owners could allow the free market to decide pay. Once business owners figured this out Fox News, CNN and more pushed for a universal income tied to the end of minimum wage. Most high paying businesses cut pay the exact same amount as the universal income the very day of the first UI payment. But what was surprising was how many companies who paid minimum wage didn’t change their pay much. Those jobs were already as low as people would work for. Suddenly a lot of people didn’t need to work jobs they hated so they went looking for jobs they could enjoy.
This resulted in a new economic powerhouse… Tiny Business. Tiny Businesses were all of these cool business ideas which wouldn’t work with the old minimum wage that suddenly could hire people for low pay because the work was fun or satisfying. Tons of these tiny businesses popped up overnight because people who know their bills are paid are often glad to do something they love for low pay. There are MILLIONS of tiny businesses which make under $20,000 a year. Most are 1-3 person businesses which express someone’s personal obsession like quality for common services that you can’t get Robots to do. Other tiny businesses offer uncommon services or product rentals. Last week the lady down the street hired a tiny business to host an Alice in Wonderland themed party for the whole neighborhood. It was CRAZY, but I had I great time. I think there was something weird about that tea though…
Of course, urban gardening became a huge thing. Gardening was always labor intensive, but with modern robots labor isn’t a problem. Pretty much every square inch of the city is beautiful and/or grows food which robots grow and harvest for us.
Almost 25% of Americans run one or more tiny businesses. Almost 40% work in one of them. When you count the 15% who just sit on their ass and do nothing, that means 80% of Americans make less than $20,000/yr, but between that and the Universal Income for the first child per parent, the average low income household earns about $40,000/yr. That’s downright comfortable with how low prices for just about everything are now.
As for the rich? They are incredibly rich. The USA has 35 TRILLIONARES! That’s not counting the $100+ corporations worth more than a Trillion Dollars, but it’s like the good old days again. People can celebrate the rich and successful, because we all have enough. If I want to work and earn I can, but if I want to relax and just enjoy the easy life I can do that too. It doesn’t hurt anyone either way.
How much stuff do I own? Not much. I don’t need to. Dozens of companies compete to offer me car rides at 8 cents per mile or less. No point in owning tools when I can hire a company for $25/mo to send robots to maintain my yard and do my maintenance. There are businesses offering just about everything for rent. Name just about any toy or tool, and I can rent it cheap and have it delivered within the hour. Usually within 15 minutes! There are still people who own a ton of crap, but for most of us it’s just not worth having to take care of something that’s just going to sit around wasting space most of the time.
Global travel spiked as more and more countries copied the USA. Low cost 2 week vacations in far off destinations cost a few hundred dollars. There are Americans who don’t even come home for years at a time. So many places are cheap enough to live that we can just use our Universal Income to live somewhere else. I could live on a tiny berth on a cruise ship if I wanted to!
Robots made labor cheap. Cost per “equivalent man hour” is down to about 60 cents per hour, and that number is still dropping. Between the cheap labor and the new energy systems we are rolling out, scientists are estimating that the world will be carbon neutral in 5 years, and with all the terraforming and carbon capture projects people are running we’ll have atmospheric CO2 back to pre-industrial levels in 20 years.
In short? Young me, please don’t check out. I like life now. The hard times sucked, and you have a ton of suck ahead of you. Your politicians are morons, and people think that if they just ignore change it won’t affect them. Eventually though when being stupid hurts enough, more and more people will demand a minimum share of the insane wealth robots are creating. They will find allies in the wealthy people who suddenly notice that their profits are shrinking because there are less and less people who can buy what they have to sell.
Good luck. It makes me happy to know that after the hard times you’ll get to enjoy what I’ve enjoyed. My first 3 businesses were horrible messes, but I had a ton of fun. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I think it's time for me to stop living in separate worlds.
I desire Power and I desire Wisdom. In many of their wonderful flavors I desire to understand and experience them.
I created a blog a long time back called “Power before Wisdom.” My first efforts to consciously seek power in my life was in metaphysics. I studied magick, and I experimented to see what worked and what didn't.
I kind of painted myself into a corner though. I only wrote about and formed the whole brand around magick and spirituality. I love reading and writing about those topics, but I also love reading and writing about politics, money, environmentalism, technology, self-growth, history and all the other examples of Power. Up until now I kept a separation though. I didn't bring much of the other stuff to PBW.
True magick is about affecting your life, your community and your world. It isn't about just playing in the sandbox of theory. It's about calling blessings to yourself. If you are doing good magick you will end up with the exact amount of good things that you are willing to live with. Health, Joy, Money, Love, Family, Friends, Opportunities, Home, Jobs/Businesses, Land/Wealth.
You will quickly find that your great magickal works will fade into the past because you now get to live with the consequences of obtaining the blessings you desired. Every once in a while something will happen or you'll change your mind and a new working will adjust your course, but generally your need for powerful magicks fade. The only way you will continue regularly is if you either are a priest to living and noisy gods or if you practice magick for magick's sake... and I do both.
I fully believe in the power of my Gods and my Magick. I also believe in the power of technology, politics, money, environmentalism, history and non-spiritual self-growth. Steve Pavlina is one of my favorite examples. Mike Hrostoski is another. I feel that I have something to add to the conversation of all of these topics with my faith and metaphysical perspectives.
I think it's time for me to slowly adjust the Power Before Wisdom Brand into expressing ALL of the Power and Wisdom I'm interested in, rather than just Magick. Hopefully that will breath fresh air into this Blog. I've been rather trepidatious about the reception this will receive from old readers and new ones, but the more I think about it the more everything I write will start to make sense when I include the whole perspective.
How many people will believe in magick more if they watch how my early posts evolved from a concern that I wouldn't be a recognizable authority because I couldn't show success, and now see posts of the evident success as well as my stories of how they manifested, and the lessons I've learned from them.
My life is full. My blessings: plentiful. My magick: strong and effective. My Gods: faithful and noisy. My ancestors: powerful and wise. And my interests: varied and interconnected.

Energy Hangovers Suck. Most practicing witches and mages know what I'm talking about. You do a great group magick ritual which brings lots of energy (even if it's just you and the spirits/gods). It's possible to stress yourself doing personal work, but it's much less common.
For many workings you can ground out the energy afterwards, but sometimes you hold on to some of it because the ritual may not be entirely done for you yet. There may be some personal work that needs higher than normal energy for a bit. Sometimes you can ground all you want, but it's like the work has made your energy body and aura bigger. To return to what used to be normal would mean backtracking.
Of course not grounding when you should can cause energy hangovers too. If you can't concentrate or sleep after a ritual it's a sign you need to ground.
Either way, minutes/hours after doing the powerful ritual, you crave water like a garden in the Sahara. You go to sleep thinking, "I may pay for that in the morning, but it was TOTALLY worth it." You wake up parched with a headache (sometimes a REALLY bad one), and for the next couple days your energy body feels overloaded and sensitive. Your second sight and energy work are a bit dull and sore the same way your muscles are after you push yourself a lot lifting weights.
Yesterday Misty and I visited a God Brother in Ifa. He was holding an Ocha birthday party. He paid for drummers and was hosting an awesome party. Misty and I were initiated around this time of year too so we decided to join and celebrate our own alongside it. 4 hours of energetic dancing and trancework with our Orisha later we were driving home.
Of course I grounded and released the energy afterwards. I slept wonderfully in the car on the way (evidence I'd grounded), but that level of work seems to have continuing effects even after releasing the energy. I'd almost equate it to how a burn continues to spread for a while after removing it from the heat source.
I knew it might be bad the next morning. I drank some water (nowhere near enough and I knew it).
Avoiding Energy Hangovers
This time however I decided to try something new. As I went to sleep I grounded and held the link to ground open all night. Whenever I'd wake up to turn over or something, I'd re-establish the link and return to sleep. I woke up without an energy hangover! I wasn't parched nearly as badly as normal and while I'm healthfully thirsty I'm not desperate to drink as much water or caffeine as I can get my hands on.
Sure I'm physically sore (from dancing) and feel like I've really worked my energy body hard. Energetically I feel that strained feeling that you feel immediately after an intense magickal work, but it's not the same sensitive dull soreness in my energy body.
Someone asked me how I kept the grounding connection open while I slept. I may have explained in another article, but the easiest way for me is to define the connection as a part of my sense of self. While I'm lying there I form the connection to ground, and then define that connection as a part of me. I am myself AND the connection to ground.
It's kind of like psychically learning to sleep sitting or standing up while leaning against something. You get yourself into a position where if you relax you won't fall and then just settle into it. If you positioned yourself wrong you'll wake up as you slip or fall when you relax a muscle you didn't realize you were using. Then you simply go back and try to find a better position where you can completely relax and stay in the position. In this case I do that magickally by defining myself as lying in this position and having this connection to ground. If I move or something happens I "fall awake", find my new position, set it and settle into it again.
Healing Energy Hangovers
For a long time I assumed that since energy hangovers were caused by too much energy work the solutions was to tone it down until I was better. Unfortunately when I did that, I might spend days or even weeks healing. Plus my "magickal muscles" atrophied when I did that too. Regular practice is key to getting stronger. It doesn't matter if you're talking about physical body, mind, energy body or will. The more extreme your skills the more consistent and extensive your practice needs to be.
A few weeks ago I had a minor energy hangover (it almost got to where I had 1-3 a week with all the temple duties I've been doing) and I decided to use some water fluid condenser to try to ease the headache. As I brushed some through my hair it felt like the meridians in my head were drinking the energy and as they drank they spread relief. I have to admit that since I figured that out I've been a bit lazy lately. If I have an energy hangover I just grab a fluid condenser and put it on. It seems that energy hangovers aren't about too much energy but rather some sort of using all your reserves. Refilling your energy later seems to be a solution that helps you heal faster.
I'm guessing that if you have no access to Alchemic Fluid Condensers you could probably do the same thing with a meditation, yoga, tai-chi or chi-gung. Grounding into a place of power would probably be a go-to for me there. I have to admit though. The convenience of using a fluid condenser is just too extreme of a benefit so I'll probably just keep using them.
A Mana Potion? Are you Kidding me?
A while back I was halfway done with a long ritual, but I was exhausted. I was out of energy, but I had to get back in the game. I put a few drops of Universal Fluid Condenser into a liter of Water. Water magickally echoes the properties of its memories, its container or its solute. By doing this I can receive the magickal benefits of drinking a liter of Universal Fluid Condenser without the side effect of way too much salt, terrible taste and possible poisoning by consuming WAY too much of the herbs in it.
It did the trick and I was able to get back in the game to finish the ritual. I've done this a few times since then. Normally when I do this I feel jazzed and empowered; ready for magick. Today I decided to try it as part of healing after yesterday's magickal binge. Instead of feeling jazzed or buzzed, drinking it feels like I'm taking necessary "nutrients". So yeah... my nerd-dom has reached a new peak. I make and drink "mana potions." X-D
